Strengths & Challenges
- ✓5th-largest district economy in Karnataka - GDDP Rs 99,527 crore (2024-25), 3.5% of state GSDP, and one of its most services-heavy districts (services 65.2%)
- ✓Karnataka's 2nd-largest software exporter and the anchor of the KDEM 'Beyond Bengaluru' Mysuru cluster (Tier-2 hub for IT/ITeS, ESDM, cybersecurity, GCCs and startups)
- ✓Home to Infosys' 337-acre Mysuru campus and Global Education Centre - described as the world's largest corporate training centre (~14,000 trainees at a time)
- ✓India's heritage-tourism capital - Mysuru Palace drew ~40.6 lakh visitors in 2023-24 (incl. ~34,600 foreign tourists), the highest in a decade, anchored by the Dasara festival
- ✓Diversified manufacturing base - BEML, JK/Vikrant Tyres, L&T, Automotive Axles, Rane and Kirloskar across eight KIADB industrial areas and two Special Investment Regions (Hebbal ~3,799 acres, Thandya ~3,198 acres)
- ✓Water-secure by Karnataka standards - all nine taluks now in the Safe groundwater category (Mysuru taluk, Semi-Critical under GEC 2020, recovered to 62.49% Safe by GEC 2024), with irrigation ~71% canal-fed from the Cauvery and Kabini
- ✓Deep knowledge base - University of Mysuru, CSIR-CFTRI, JSS and NIE, with ~40,000 engineering and degree students in the cluster (KDEM)
- ✓GI-tagged heritage industries - Mysore Silk (KSIC), Mysore Sandalwood lineage, and Nanjangud Rasabale banana
- ✗Per-capita income only Rs 2.69 lakh (2024-25) - about 70% of the state average of Rs 3.86 lakh, ranking 17th of 31 districts despite the large aggregate economy
- ✗Credit is urban-concentrated - the CD ratio is a healthy 81.63% (31.03.2025, above the state's 77.25%), but about 73% of advances sit in Mysuru city, leaving rural taluks (Hunsur, H.D. Kote, Periyapatna) under-served
- ✗IT growth beyond the Infosys anchor is still early - the wider GCC, startup and ESDM base needs depth to reach the KDEM 2030 targets
- ✗Sharp rural-urban divide - rural literacy ~63.3% against urban ~86.1%, and ~54% of workers are still in agriculture
- ✗Tourism is seasonal and Dasara-concentrated, with visitor pressure on heritage assets and limited high-value/overnight tourism spread
- ✗Agriculture is exposed to Cauvery-basin water-sharing cycles and to FCV-tobacco demand and regulatory pressure in Hunsur/Periyapatna
- ✗Post-harvest storage gap - about 9 lakh MT capacity against an estimated 15 lakh MT requirement (NABARD PLP)
- ✗Industrial data is dated - the last District Industrial Profile (DIC/MSME) is from 2010-11; current MSME, employment and turnover figures need a fresh survey
Opportunities
- ⚡Convert the KDEM 'Beyond Bengaluru' push into a genuine second tech city - GCC and ESDM parks targeting a USD 10 billion digital economy and ~1.5 lakh digital jobs by 2030
- ⚡Lift per-capita income toward the state average by deepening high-value services (IT, GCCs, tourism) and modern manufacturing on the existing base
- ⚡Deepen rural and MSME/manufacturing credit - the district's healthy CD ratio (81.63%) is concentrated in the city, so extending agri-value-chain and enterprise lending into the rural taluks is the opportunity
- ⚡Grow high-value, year-round and heritage/eco/wellness tourism circuits (Palace, Chamundi Hills, Nagarhole, Kabini, Srirangapatna) beyond the Dasara peak
- ⚡Expand agro-processing and FPO-led value chains and close the storage gap - CFTRI-backed food processing, Nanjangud banana, sericulture and dairy
- ⚡Leverage water security and the Cauvery-Kabini canal network to modernise irrigation and diversify cropping while other Karnataka districts face groundwater stress
- ⚡Build ESDM / electronics manufacturing in the Thandya and upcoming Kochanahalli industrial areas, adjacent to the IT and skilling ecosystem
Goals
Next Steps
- GCC, IT and ESDM park capacity (Global Technology Centre 3,000 seats; Gopalan 1 million sq ft)
- Scale plug-and-play from 4,000 occupied toward 10,000 seats
- Cyber Security Centre of Excellence and startup infrastructure (state Cluster Seed Fund; no Mysuru-specific allocation published)
- Swadesh Darshan 2.0: Ecological Experience Zone (Rs 18.48 cr) and Tonga-Ride Heritage Zone (Rs 2.72 cr)
- PRASHAD Chamundeshwari Devi Temple development (Rs 45.38 cr sanctioned)
- Year-round circuits and visitor management (Palace, Chamundi Hills, Srirangapatna, Kabini)
- Schneider Electric Youth Impact Centre (Rs 16 cr, ~2,000 youth/year)
- IT/ESDM, GCC and design skilling aligned to cluster demand
- Industry-institute linkages with CFTRI, University of Mysuru, NIE and JSS
- Extend MSME and manufacturing credit into the rural taluks (city holds ~73% of advances)
- Sustain the healthy CD ratio (81.63%, above the state's 77.25%) while broadening its reach

Mysuru's Total Tech Economy: Digital + Biotech, $5.4B Today
KDEM tracks biotechnology separately from the digital economy. Mysuru is Karnataka's second bioeconomy cluster: about $3.7B today, larger than its $1.7B digital economy. Together, a $5.4B tech economy today.
Methodology: the digital line repeats the estimated path above (bottom-up $1.7B anchor, GDDP-indexed history). The biotech line applies Mysuru's 9.4% share (KDEM regional mapping) to the KBER state series; forward years follow KDEM's stated conservative state-biotech growth of 11-12% a year (for example 2026-27 is 9.4% of about $49B, ~$4.6B), reaching ~$8B on the $85B conservative 2032 scenario. Estimate tables sit under each engine graph below.
| Digital economy today | $1.7B | Bottom-up sum of the four engines (table above) |
| Biotechnology today | $3.7B | 9.4% of Karnataka's $39.2B bioeconomy (KBER 2025; KDEM regional mapping) |
| Total tech economy | $5.4B | Digital + biotech, tracked as separate streams |
| Biotech 2025-26 point | $4.1B | 9.4% x ~$44B: KBER base grown one year at KDEM's stated conservative 11-12% a year (estimate) |

IT Services & GCCs (exports + domestic)
CORE ENGINEMethodology: today ($0.72B) = official Rs 5,000 Cr a year of IT exports ($0.60B at Rs 83/USD) + estimated $0.12B domestic IT (Karnataka's 20.5% domestic-to-exports ratio). The 2021-25 history applies the only growth rate the published numbers support: exports went from Rs 4,200 Cr (2018-19) to Rs 5,000 Cr (2025), about 3% a year, so each earlier year is today divided by 1.03 (0.72, 0.70, 0.68, 0.66, 0.64). Why the line is this flat: the published figures are STPI-registered units only and they genuinely grew slowly; Mysuru's SEZ campuses (Infosys SEZs, L&TTS SEZ) report separately under the SEZ Act with no published Mysuru figure, and likely carry much of the real growth. So the flat history reflects the measurement scope, and $0.72B is a conservative floor. The dashed path to $6B is constant-growth, for shape only.
| Exports today | $0.60B | Rs 5,000 Cr a year, official (Government of Karnataka, Big Tech Show 2025); STPI-registered units |
| SEZ exports | not published | Infosys Mysuru SEZs and L&TTS SEZ report under the SEZ Act separately; no Mysuru zone-wise figure exists, so the total is higher than shown (floor) |
| Domestic today | $0.12B | Exports x 20.5% (Karnataka domestic-to-exports ratio, KDEM dashboard) |
| Combined today | $0.72B (floor) | Sum of the quantifiable components |
| History 2021-25 | $0.64-0.72B | Today divided by 1.03 per year back: the ~3%/yr is the observed growth between the only two published anchors, Rs 4,200 Cr (2018-19) and Rs 5,000 Cr (2025) |
| Why so flat | scope | STPI-scope exports grew only ~19% in six years; SEZ growth (Infosys, L&TTS) is reported separately and not published for Mysuru |
| Cross-check | Rs 5,700 Cr FY24 | MARC Insights private estimate for Mysuru IT exports, consistent with a higher-than-5,000 total |
| 2030 share | $6.0B | $4.0B exports + $2.0B domestic (re-weighted $10B split) |

Startups & Innovation
ECOSYSTEM ENGINEMethodology: the current figure is about 600 DPIIT-recognised startups in the Mysuru cluster (Startup India recognition dashboard, 2025), the official registry count. This replaces the wider 1,200+ ecosystem figure cited earlier, which mixed recognised ventures with unregistered ones. Earlier years are back-cast at about 20% a year, the recent pace of DPIIT recognitions, and are estimates; only the current count is a hard figure. The dashed path to the 2,800 vision is constant-growth (about 36% a year), for shape only. Startup revenue is counted inside the IT and digitizing engines, so this engine is tracked on counts.
| Current (2025) | 600+ | DPIIT-recognised startups in the cluster, Startup India recognition dashboard |

Newly Digitizing Sectors
ESTIMATED BASELINEMethodology: no Mysuru-specific baseline is published. Today assumes Mysuru sits at the state's digitization level: statewide, digitizing sectors are at 58% of their 2032 target on the KDEM dashboard, so 58% of Mysuru's $0.8B share gives about $0.46B (estimate). History back-cast at the state digitizing growth rate (~8% a year); dashed path is constant-growth.
| State digitizing today | $20.23B | KDEM Strategic Dashboard |
| State 2032 target | $35B | KDEM Strategic Dashboard; today = 58% of target |
| Mysuru 2030 share | $0.8B | 8% of the $10B vision |
| Mysuru today | $0.46B | $0.8B x 58%, assuming Mysuru sits at the state's digitization level |
| Back-cast rate | ~8%/yr | The growth the state digitizing path itself implies ($20.23B to $35B by 2032 is ~8% a year), applied backwards (estimate) |

Biotechnology
BIO STREAM (outside the $10B)Methodology: Mysuru's biotech is KDEM's regional mapping share (9.4%) applied to the KBER state series ($31B in 2023 to $39.2B in 2025). Forward years follow KDEM's own stated conservative growth for state biotech (11-12% a year), holding the 9.4% share: for example 2025-26 is 9.4% of about $44B (~$4.1B) and 2026-27 is 9.4% of about $49B (~$4.6B), reaching ~$8B (9.4% of the $85B conservative 2032 scenario). All values are estimates; KDEM publishes no Mysuru-specific biotech target.
| State bioeconomy 2025 | $39.2B | KBER 2025 (publicly corroborated) |
| Mysuru share | 9.4% | KDEM biotech regional mapping (model) |
| Mysuru today | $3.7B | $39.2B x 9.4% |
| History | share x state series | $31.0B (2023), $32.4B (2024) x 9.4%; 2021-22 back-extrapolated |
| Forward years | 11-12%/yr | KDEM's stated conservative state-biotech growth, share held; e.g. 2026-27 = 9.4% x ~$49B = ~$4.6B |
| 2032 if share held | ~$8.0B | 9.4% x $85B conservative state scenario; not a KDEM target |

Revenue is small and fell while S3V stayed in R&D and plant-building mode; the Rs 300 Cr programme funds the shift to manufacturing scale. Source: MCA filings via UnlistedZone / Tracxn (unlisted company).

Mysuru is Karnataka's 5th-largest district economy (GDDP Rs 99,527 cr) and its 2nd-largest software exporter, yet per-capita income (Rs 2.69L) is only ~70% of the state average (rank 17/31). The agenda is converting a strong services-and-heritage base into higher incomes, and extending its healthy but city-concentrated bank credit into the rural taluks.
Canal-fed and water-secure - ~71% of net irrigated area is Cauvery-Kabini canal command and all 9 taluks are groundwater-Safe (Mysuru taluk recovered from Semi-Critical). Paddy, ragi, sugarcane and FCV tobacco (Hunsur/Periyapatna) run alongside an under-built agro-processing and FPO base and a post-harvest storage gap.
Mysuru city is a tertiary-care hub (Mysore Medical College / K.R. Hospital, JSS, Apollo BGS, Columbia Asia, Narayana; ~3,500+ beds), but sub-centres (354 vs ~600 norm) and CHCs (9 vs ~25 norm) fall short in rural taluks. Facility counts need a fresh audit (CHC count is 2010-11).
PHC coverage is adequate on IPHS norms, but sub-centres and CHCs fall short on the 2011 population base. Mysuru city is a strong tertiary-care hub (Mysore Medical College / K.R. Hospital, JSS, Apollo BGS, Columbia Asia, Narayana; ~3,500+ hospital beds per KDEM), so effective access is better than the rural counts alone suggest. CHC count dates to 2010-11 and needs a fresh audit.
Literacy is 72.8% with a sharp rural-urban gap (63.3% vs 86.1%). Mysuru's strength is its knowledge base - University of Mysuru, NIE, KSOU, JSS and CFTRI, with ~40,000 engineering and degree students in the cluster - which can feed the KDEM cluster if skilling aligns to IT/ESDM and GCC demand.
Revenue and land are central to the industrial and IT build-out: the Hebbal and Thandya Special Investment Regions (~7,000 acres) and the upcoming Kochanahalli area need clean land records and timely acquisition. Mysuru is largely water-secure, easing the usual land-water conflicts.
Mysuru has a manufacturing base most districts lack - BEML, JK/Vikrant Tyres, L&T, Automotive Axles, Rane and Kirloskar across eight KIADB areas and two Special Investment Regions (~7,000 acres). The agenda is modernisation toward ESDM/EV and converting the base into higher incomes and credit.
Water is a strength, not a crisis: district groundwater extraction is ~51-55% (Safe), all 9 taluks Safe (Mysuru taluk recovered from Semi-Critical to 62.49% in GEC 2024), and irrigation is ~71% canal-fed from the Cauvery and Kabini. The task is efficiency, recharge and lake rejuvenation, not extraction control.
Mysuru is KDEM's flagship 'Beyond Bengaluru' cluster - Karnataka's 2nd-largest software exporter, anchored by Infosys' Global Education Centre. The USD 10 bn / ~1.5 lakh-jobs 2030 vision needs a broader GCC, startup and ESDM base; 240+ startups and 10,000 plug-and-play seats (4,000 occupied) are the current base.
Mysuru: 30 lakh people, Karnataka's 5th-largest district economy (GDDP Rs 99,527 cr) and its heritage-and-tech capital - but per-capita income is only Rs 2.69L (~70% of state, rank 17/31), even though bank credit is healthy (CD ratio 82%). Indicative Rs 16,000 Cr scaffold across 3 phases to build the second knowledge city.
Development Roadmap
Sanctioned → Released → Utilised awaiting monthly Finance returns
- GCC, IT and ESDM park capacity (Global Technology Centre 3,000 seats; Gopalan 1 million sq ft)

- Sustain the healthy CD ratio (81.63%, above the state's 77.25%) while broadening its reach
Sanctioned → Released → Utilised awaiting monthly Finance returns
- Electronics / ESDM manufacturing in the Thandya and Kochanahalli industrial areas
- EV, precision-engineering and machine-tool modernisation on the existing base (BEML, Rane, Automotive Axles)
- Anchor investments in the KIADB Special Investment Regions
Sanctioned → Released → Utilised awaiting monthly Finance returns
- CFTRI-backed food processing and cold-chain / storage (against the ~6 lakh MT storage gap)
- Scale NABARD-supported FPOs beyond the current six
- Nanjangud banana, sericulture and dairy value addition
Sanctioned → Released → Utilised awaiting monthly Finance returns
All nine taluks are Safe (Mysuru taluk recovered from Semi-Critical under GEC 2020 to 62.49% Safe under GEC 2024). Still prioritise recharge and lake rejuvenation in Mysuru taluk given its urban pressure and highest extraction; use canal-command efficiency and micro-irrigation in the rest, with headroom for assured-surface-water cropping in the western rain-fed taluks.
- Canal efficiency, micro-irrigation and lake rejuvenation (especially Mysuru taluk)
- Crop diversification using assured surface water
- Sustain the Safe groundwater status through recharge
Sanctioned → Released → Utilised awaiting monthly Finance returns
- New sub-centres and CHCs against the norm shortfall in Hunsur, H.D. Kote and Periyapatna
- Leverage Mysuru city's tertiary-care base for referral
Consolidate Mysuru as Karnataka's second knowledge-and-culture city: mature GCC and startup ecosystem, high-value and wellness tourism, creative and design economy, and urban infrastructure to manage growth around the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway corridor.

Data to Verify
9 datapoints pending field reconciliation · Reviewed 2026-07-10
Figures updated to the Economic Survey of Karnataka 2025-26 (2024-25 data): Mysuru GDDP Rs 99,527 cr, PCI Rs 2,69,333, state avg PCI Rs 3,86,156. The prior 2024-25 survey (2023-24 data) had GDDP Rs 88,717 cr / PCI Rs 2,39,296 / state avg Rs 3,39,813
The NABARD PLP 2022-23 reports net irrigated area as 1,41,607 ha in the water-resources narrative and 1,32,044 ha in the district table
NABARD PLP (GEC 2020) classed Mysuru taluk as Semi-Critical. Confirmed via CGWB INGRES that Mysuru taluk has since recovered to Safe: 65.86% (GEC 2023) and 62.49% (GEC 2024). All nine taluks are now Safe
Earlier left blank for want of an official figure. The Economic Survey of Karnataka 2023-24 publishes a District-wise HDI 2022 table: Mysuru 0.625, rank 14/30 (state avg 0.644). Secondary 2025 compilations quoting ~0.74 / rank 4 are estimates, not official
MSME headline is now the current official Udyam count (147,732, Ministry of MSME / data.gov.in). KIADB plot-allotment and CHC counts are still from the 2010-11 District Industrial Profile and remain dated; per-district Udyam employment/turnover are not published
KDEM 'Mysuru cluster' figures span 4 districts (Mysuru, Mandya, Ramanagaram, Chamarajanagar), not Mysuru alone; the tab labels cluster vs district throughout. Startup counts measure different things: the dashboard uses the DPIIT-recognised count (about 600 on the Startup India registry, 2025) as the current figure, not the wider 1,200+ ecosystem number KDEM quoted in 2025 (which mixed recognised and unregistered ventures), and 2,800 as the 2030 target (some KDEM documents cite 2,500). The '$10 billion' headline is about Rs 83,000 crore at Rs 83/USD; an earlier 'Rs 10,060 cr' figure was dropped as a USD/rupee conflation. The '4/37 EODB rank' and '42% of national IT exports' are KDEM/vision-doc claims not independently confirmed and are excluded.
District-level per-industry direct employment (IT, tourism), tourism revenue, and per-industry GDDP contribution are not published by any reliable official source for Mysuru, so these fields are left blank rather than estimated.
Credit updated from the 2021 NABARD PLP (CD 64%) to the SLBC Karnataka district-wise CD-ratio workbook as on 31.03.2025 (deposits Rs 61,887 cr, advances Rs 50,518 cr, CD 81.63%, state avg 77.25%). Branch/ATM/PACS counts still date to 2022-23 and need a current SLBC ANX-IX pull; sector-wise ACP amounts use a paired count/amount layout and were not line-extracted
Phase budgets, progress percentages, the investment framing and job figures are planning estimates, not adopted allocations or measured delivery
